Art

At Wetherby Kensington we believe that art and design technology (DT) stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Boys use colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design technology boys learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. Boys explore the varying ideas and meanings portrayed in the work of artists and designers.  Through learning about the roles and functions of art and DT, boys explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures.

Through our art and DT curriculum the Wetherby boys are given the freedom to express themselves through various art forms and creative processes. During lessons boys are encouraged to open their minds to new ideas and alternative ways of thinking. We actively encourage creative thinking and provide opportunities for the boys to delve into the never ending, wonderful possibilities that the imagination has to offer.

We encourage the boys to compare and contrast the work of others. They will study many creative masters of the art world and will gain an understanding and be able to explore the different working methods and techniques of these amazing artists. The boys are very much encouraged to interpret the work of others through their own eyes and share their opinions, ideas and thoughts.

Our boys are encouraged to take inspiration from the world around us and use a variety of materials and techniques to communicate their response. Promoting art on a deeper level, boys begin to understand the relationship between art and emotion and how they can represent this through colour, line, shape and form.

At Wetherby Kensington we celebrate achievements in art and share creative achievements within the school, through monthly awards such as Artist of the Month, Wetherby Tate and Picture of the Month. Through external competitions and exhibitions, the  boys are also able to showcase their work in a more professional context and highlight the artistic talent that Wetherby Kensington continues to produce.
